Vasantham
is an offshoot of the Ethno racial Seniors Project which was sponsored by the
Division of Geriatric Psychiatry of the University of Toronto, the Departments
of Psychiatry of Mount Sinai Hospital and St.Michael’s / Wellesley Central Hospital.
The Project was funded by Health Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health.
The goal of the project was to examine and address barriers impeding access
to Health affecting Tamil and Chinese Seniors. An implementation task group
was formed following the Consensus Conference in April 1997. Subsequently, a
Planning group for Vasantham was formed after a series of public education forums
and community conferences. In 1999, Vasantham - A Tamil Seniors Wellness Centre
was established with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. A need-based
evolution, to put it in a nutshell.
